Block at the SMTP Level

We use lists (known as RBL's, real-time blackhole lists) of known spammers from Spamcop, the SBL and others to reject e-mail coming from known spammer networks, open relays and other Bad TM places - before it gets into our mailserver. This radically reduces the amount of spam that gets through to your inbox.

I Don't Want the RBL's

Occasionally, these RBL's can cause inconvenience, so we offer an alternative mail server that is free of RBL checks. If you would like to use this alternate service and turn off RBL checks for any of your domains, please file a support ticket.

We are now using the SA-learn feature of Spam Assassin to enable it to learn from itself and improve its spam identification accuracy.

Tag All E-Mails

We have also implemented a Spam-tagging system (Spam Assassin). Our mail server tests every accepted e-mail to see if it might be spam and adds extra headers with the test results. You can then setup a filter in your email client to, say, move all spam emails into a spam folder.

For example, here are the relevant headers from a sample piece of spam. Most e-mail clients do not show you the full headers of a given e-mail by default but they are there:

X-Spam-Status: Yes, score=10.8 required=5.0

Perhaps the simplest way to handle this is to set up a filter, or rule, in your e-mail client that looks for the header X-Spam-Status and if it contains YES, then it moves the e-mail message to a separate folder called SPAM, which you previously set up. This way, the spam does not make it to your inbox, but you can still review it later to make sure there's nothing in there that you might need, before deleting it.

Viruses

Viruses can do even more damage than spam, especially if you or your clients are using Windows machines to check their email. High Speed Rails takes this threat seriously. We block all viruses at the SMTP level - before they get into our mail server. Very few, if any, virus-laden emails will get through to your email client.
